Voluntourism: making a difference while you make fun

As a part of our community engagement initiative we recently partnered with a Himalayan village to develop and manage volunteering programs in the village where people from across the world will be contributing in the community development projects undergoing in the village.

In June this year (2012) we inaugurated our voluntourism program with a teaching assignment at a local village school. The program was to teach village kids at the school while living in a home-stay with a local village family. Our first volunteer was a lady named Laura Turek from Los Angeles, California. She stayed in the village for about a month and taught English and Maths in new, innovative ways to the students of class 6th and 7th. The highlights of her trip were: Homestay with a local Kumauni family, iteracting with the kids at the school, learning to cook the local delicacies, practicing Yoga in the pristine Himalayan environment, learning about self-sustaining village households, learning about organic farming, learning to ride a motorcycle. Here is photo journey of her first Indian and Himalayan experience.
